USB-C input vs output: follow the direction of power

Two ports can look alike and do different jobs. Read the label before choosing a cable or connecting a device.

Input recharges the power bank

A port marked Input accepts power to refill the bank’s battery. Connect it to an appropriate power source using a compatible cable. Its input specification determines which charging combinations the bank can accept; it does not describe the power the bank can supply to your phone.

Output charges your device

A port marked Output supplies power from the bank to a connected device. Compare that output rating with your phone, tablet or accessory’s requirements. The shape of the connector alone does not establish the direction of power, the charging speed, or support for a particular protocol.

Input/output means both roles are supported

A port labeled Input/Output can serve either role as supported by the product. It does not automatically mean that the power bank can recharge itself while powering another device. That separate behavior is commonly called pass-through charging and must be explicitly documented for the product. Do not infer it from the presence of multiple ports.

USB-C does not tell the whole story

USB-IF distinguishes USB-C connectors from USB Power Delivery and data standards. Manufacturers can support different capabilities through the same connector shape. Read the advertised specification instead of assuming that a USB-C port provides laptop charging, high-speed data or video output. See USB-IF’s connector and terminology guidance.

A simple check before connecting

  1. Identify the exact port label and its input/output rating.
  2. Check your device manufacturer’s charging requirements.
  3. Choose a cable intended for the connection and required power.
  4. If using more than one output, check the bank’s combined-output specification.

If your phone charges more slowly than expected, confirm the port and supported protocol before concluding that the bank is faulty. Our charging-watts guide explains why a headline maximum may differ from your connection.

Apply this to PowerPulse

Both PowerPulse 10K and PowerPulse 20K list USB-C and USB-A connections. Use the individual product’s specifications and physical port labels to determine the right connection; do not assume every USB-C port has identical capabilities. If you cannot identify the correct port, send support your product model and device model before ordering or relying on a particular charging setup.
